How it works

From a stack of statements to a signed accounting

Summafolio does the reading, sorting and arithmetic. You make the judgment calls, and you sign.

Steps

Set up the matter

Choose the matter type (trust, decedent's estate, adult conservatorship or power of attorney), the state format, the accounting period and the fiduciary. Enter assets on hand at the start with their carry values: date-of-death values for a decedent's assets, inventory values or the closing values of the prior account. Confirm the matter doesn't involve a minor; those matters aren't supported.

Upload statements

Add each bank and brokerage account and upload its statements as PDF, CSV, OFX or QFX. Summafolio reads the statement period, opening and closing balances, every transaction and the closing share positions. Files are encrypted as soon as they arrive.

Review categories

Each transaction gets a suggested category (dividend, trustee fee, distribution to a beneficiary, sale of 200 shares and so on) and a principal and income allocation with the rule and citation that produced it. Transfers between the matter's own accounts are matched automatically. You confirm or change anything, and every change is recorded.

Reconcile

The accounting identity has to hold: charges equal credits. Separately, every account is rebuilt from its statements and must match each closing balance and share count. Gaps between statements, breaks in the balance chain and uncategorized items are listed as exceptions. Unusual items, such as payments to the fiduciary or cash withdrawals, are flagged for a second look.

Review and sign off

Reviewers add notes against a transaction or schedule. Sign-off is available only when the accounting is reconciled and every note is resolved. If anything changes afterwards, the sign-off is revoked automatically and the change appears in the audit trail.

Export

Download the court-style PDF (cover page, summary, schedules, beneficiary statements and verification page), the Excel workbook with live formulas, a CSV bundle, per-beneficiary summary letters and a review packet for your attorney or CPA. Re-render in any supported state format at no extra cost.

What's in the accounting

Every schedule, cross-referenced

Summary

Charges and credits, or the state's own summary (Florida items I-VI, the New York and Ohio recaps), each line referenced to its schedule.

Receipts and disbursements

Itemized by date with the source statement, split between income and principal where the format calls for it.

Sales and gains

Proceeds, carry value and gain or loss per sale, with acquisition date and basis source.

Distributions

Cash and in-kind distributions per beneficiary, in-kind assets at carry value.

Assets on hand

Closing inventory with carry value and current value from the final statements.

Verification

A signature page for the fiduciary. You add the verification language your court requires.

What we don't do

Clear lines, on purpose

  • We don't give legal, tax or investment advice, and no attorney-client or accountant-client relationship is created.
  • We don't file anything with a court or send anything to beneficiaries. You do, after you review and sign.
  • We don't prepare tax returns or compute estate tax.
  • We don't support guardianships of minors or matters with minor beneficiaries.

Working with an attorney?

Most court accountings are reviewed by counsel. The review packet gives your attorney or CPA the PDF, the workbook, the reconciliation report, review flags, a source index for every transaction, the allocation rules applied and the verified audit log, in one file.
